Alaska Army wife charged with killing baby daughters

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – An Alaska woman has been indicted on murder counts in the deaths of her two baby daughters two years apart.

Stephany Lafountain is charged with killing a 4-month-old in 2015 and a 13-month-old in November 2017.

Police say the first child’s death was consistent with suffocation. The child last year died of lack of oxygen to the brain.

Online court records do not list Lafountain’s attorney.

Lafountain called emergency responders Nov. 20 to say her child was not breathing. They lived on Fort Wainwright Army Post. Her husband was deployed.

The baby died Nov. 24.

Detectives later reopened an investigation into the death of Lafountain’s infant in 2015 when she was in a previous relationship.

Detectives say Lafountain had searched the internet for topics such as how to smother.
