Report: Crime in Alaska increased again last year

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – A report by the Alaska Department of Public Safety shows crime across the state increased by 6 percent last year.

KTUU-TV reports the state compiled data from 32 law enforcement agencies, indicating crime has increased by 26 percent over the last five years.

According to the report released Wednesday, an assault and a burglary occurred every two hours on average last year. A theft was committed nearly every half-hour and a killing occurred every six days.

State officials say a number of factors contributed to the crime rise, including the budget crisis and the opioid crisis, as well as the low staffing in police departments and prosecutor offices.

Alaska Attorney General Jahna Lindemuth says addressing the matter will take a “multi-agency approach.”
