JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) – U.S. Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has approved Alaska’s state plan for schools.

The federal Every Student Succeeds Act requires states to develop plans that address standards, testing, accountability and support for struggling schools. It was intended to provide states with greater flexibility.

Elements of Alaska’s approved plan include setting goals for each school and district and emphasizing the importance of reading at grade level by third grade.
